Elma Chamber of Commerce Presents Elma Police Department with Business of the Quarter Award

Elma Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors presented the Business of the Quarter Award, for the second quarter of 2016, to Elma Police Department. Although Elma Police Department is not a “for profit business” they contribute in a large way to support the Elma business community. Chief Sue Shultz accepted the award on behalf of Elma Police Department at Elma Chamber of Commerce membership meeting, April, 14, 2016.

Chief Sue Schultz was hired in 2015. There are nine full time employees, including seven officers and two police clerks. Upon Chief Shultz arrival a new policy and procedure manual was developed. Elma Police Department established the mission statement: “To Professionally serve and partnership with integrity, trust and respect”. Elma Police Department is proactive in the fight against drugs and the crimes associated with drug dealing.

Elma Police Department is focused on getting out into the community. They have consistently been part of any Elma events and have participated in a positive way to build a well-respected and liked presence. Elma Police Department has established partnerships with Elma Schools and Summit Pacific Medical Center, to provide a safe environment for students and people visiting the hospital. Officers are also encouraged to attend local sports events and get out of their cars and play ball whenever there is an opportunity. They are active with the Chamber of Commerce and East County Rotary. The Police Department participates with the annual Elma City-Wide Garage Sale Days event by holding “Dunk and Cop Event”, and offering free hot dogs, soda and chips to the public.

When asked what the goals are for Elma Police Department, Chief Sue Schultz responded with the following: “Our hope is to increase in the numbers of officers in the future and continue our community policing efforts. We are excited to expand our Volunteer program and hope to have a Citizens’ Academy in the near future. Our Goal continues to be, making Elma a safe and family friendly community and extend a helping hand to those that want to help themselves. We hope to partner with the local Fire Department and help develop CERT teams for the area. We desire to develop neighborhood watch programs that go beyond the idea of watching out for crimes in the neighborhood and approach the idea of taking care of each other in the event of a significant event”.
